The Daily Mail report that a hospital in the UK has spent £10,000 on running workshops to get staff to smile more often at patients as part of their Active Caring for Everyone (ACE) scheme.
Doctors and nurses who do not smile at their patients are given cards which say: 'You didn’t play your ACE card'
This has been described as patronising and a waste of money. But how important is it to smile at patients? Is it a part of your duty of care to make them feel at ease? Is it a crucial communication tool? How often do you do it?
